A Day in the Life of a Registered Nurse:

The Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and supervises individual patient care according to unit policies and procedures. Accepts responsibility for direction of co-workers in the implementation of care plans. May be required to work on other units according to distribution of staff and patients.

    • Completes nursing assessment of patient and documents appropriately into patient chart.
    • Develops and reviews and revises a plan of care, including a discharge plan, based upon the assessment of patient's needs.
    • Implements medical and nursing orders per plan of care and documents appropriately.
    • Evaluates patient's response to care and engages in patient and family teaching as appropriate.
    • Oversees staff (LPN, CNA, and PSA) assigned for providing patient care.
    • Participates in Bedside Shift Report.
    • Collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Manager to assure the integration of the ANA's Scope & Standards of Practice, assuring that these standards are identified as the measurement criteria for nursing practice on the unit.
    • Coordinates patient care in collaboration with providers and ancillary departments to achieve quality outcomes.
    • Completes Unit specific orientation and ongoing training and competencies as assigned based on department role, scope of services, and organizational standards. DEPARTMENT/ROLE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

      ARU: Attends family conferences, patient care Conferences, and daily stand-up meetings.

      CARE CLINIC, SAME DAY SURGERY, and PACU: Collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Manager to assure integration of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) Standards of Nursing Practice.

      CHARGE NURSE: Facilitates immediate and direct complaint intervention and resolution. Participates in ongoing evaluation of patients, assuring efficiency of communication with patients, follow-up and flow through the system. Performs daily rounds on the floors to assess patients and possible critical situations to determine patient care needs and outcomes. Assists in the identification and management of staff, patient, and family educational needs. Responsible for staff management, to include sending staff home in the interest of safe patient care, in the absence of Clinical Nurse Manager. Oversight of charging and documentation accuracy, including review and analysis of effectiveness of nursing interventions.

      CLINICAL EDUCATION: Instructs Nurse Residency or clinical certification classes as directed by the program director. Deliver clinical curriculum utilizing various methods.

      DIALYSIS: Oversees dialysis treatments from beginning to end. Assesses and evaluates patient's reaction to treatment and medications. Sets up and troubleshoots dialysis equipment and supplies. Also Provides minimal specific equipment maintenance along with cleanliness and sterilization between patients.

      FORENSIC NURSING: Provides timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to victims of trauma and violence, to include but not limited to Intimate Partner Violence, Child Abuse, Strangulation, Elder Abuse and Sexual Assault and Abuse. Follows established forensic nursing protocols. Triages and assesses patients, provides prophylaxis for pregnancy and STI's, coordinates medical and psychological care, provides advocacy, community resource and law enforcement referrals. Performs complete head to toe physical, document patient history, collect forensic evidence including photographic documentation. Be available for call coverage according to forensic nursing protocol. Maintains forensic nursing competences and participate in quality assurance projects, community education and peer review.

      HOSPICE: Serves as patient case manager and focuses specifically on the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the patient and family in a nurturing and supportive role. Attends the first available hospice volunteer training after acceptance of employment.

      MEDICAL IMAGING: Procedural Nurse: Provides IV moderate sedation and pain relief. Assists with biopsies, the placement of drains for abscesses, and the insertion of chest tubes. May assist with Peripheral Runoffs, PAS port placements and removals, Nephrostomy/Biliary tube placements, AV Fistulograms with and without angioplasty, IVC Filter placement and removal, Discograms and thrombolytic infusion therapy.

      VASCULAR ACCESS NURSE: Hard stick IVs, ultrasound guided IVs, PICC insertions, mid-line insertions, arterial line insertions, port accesses, and dressing changes.

      Desired Skills:
      • Demonstrates effective leadership and professional/clinical skills according to Standards of Care, to include drug calculations.
      • Ability to assess a patient's condition
      • Ability to utilize critical thinking to formulate plan of care, select appropriate interventions, and evaluate patient's response to plan of care and problem solve as needed.
      • Ability to explain to patient/family the nursing process and how it helps meet the patients' needs and improve patient outcomes.
      • Verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills Here Is What You Will Need:
        • Wyoming Registered Nurse License or enhanced Nurse Licensure (eNLC)
        • Cheyenne Regional AHA RQI within 14 calendar days of start date
        • Six (6) months or more of nursing experience required (12 months preferred) for the following units:
          • Medical/Oncology, Medical, Telemetry, Surgical/Ortho/Neuro, Pediatric, ICU, OB/GYN, Nursery II, Acute Rehab, Emergency Department, Labor and Delivery, Care Clinic, PACU, and Same Day Surgery
          • 30 Days to 2 years: Additional requirements/certifications as noted in the Specialty Certification Requirements and Mandatory Requirements for Specialty Units lists below Nice to Have:
            • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
              • Specialty certifications grace periods, unless otherwise specified per department (see mandatory requirements for specialty units below):
              • AHA ACLS, AHA PALS, and AAP NRP should be obtained within 6 months of hire or transfer as required by specialty unit.
              • TNCC and ENPC should be obtained within 1 year of hire or transfer as required by specialty unit. MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIALTY UNITS

                Candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements for specialty units once hired or transfer, unless alternate arrangements made with the Clinical Manager:

                Administrative Rapid Response (ARR) - NIHSS within 30 days; AHA ACLS, TNCC, ENPC or AHA PALS, AAP NRP, and CPI within 1 year

                Ambulatory Infusion Center, Hematology/Oncology Clinic, and Radiation Oncology - ONS biotherapy/chemotherapy within 6 months

                Behavioral Health - CPI training within 90 days

                Cardiac Services - AHA ACLS

                Dialysis - AHA ACLS

                ED - NIHSS within 90 days; CPI, AHA ACLS, and TNCC within 6 months; ENPC and NRP within 1 year

                Forensic Nursing - IAFN approved SANE training within 2 months of hire. Complete forensic orientation training within 6 months of hire

                ICU - NIHSS within 90 days; AHA ACLS and TNCC within 1 year

                Labor and Delivery - AAP NRP within 6 months of hire; AHA ACLS within 6 months of completing L&D orientation; Fetal Heart Monitoring within 6 months of completing L&D orientation; and PeriOp 101 within 1 year of hire/transfer to L&D

                MBU - AAP NRP and AHA ACLS within 6 months of hire

                Medical Imaging - Procedural Nurse: AHA ACLS, AHA PALS, and Moderate Sedation within six months of hire

                Nursery - AAP NRP within 6 months

                PACU- AHA ACLS, AHA PALS, CPAN within 2 years, minimum of six months critical care experience

                Peds - AHA NRP within 6 months; AHA PALS or ENPC within 6 months of finishing specialized orientation

                Same Day Surgery - CAPA within 2 years, AHA ACLS within 1 year of hire.

                SONU - NIHSS within 3 months, CPI for Charge Nurse within 6 months of hire date.

                Telemetry - AHA ACLS within 1 year of hire
